Government Services / Programs

There are many websites in Canada that provide information about government programs and services for older adults. These websites includes sections on finances, benefits, housing, transportation and more.

Overview

Both the federal and provincial governments offer a variety of financial assistance programs designed to help seniors maintain their independence, improve their quality of life, and manage the rising costs of retirement.

Many seniors are unaware of the benefits and programs available to them, which can result in missed financial support. Understanding these programs can help maximize income and reduce financial stress during retirement.

Some of the most common federal income support programs include the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), which provides monthly retirement benefits based on contributions made during a person’s working years, and Old Age Security (OAS), a monthly payment available to most Canadians aged 65 and older who meet residency requirements.

For lower-income seniors, the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) can provide additional monthly financial assistance on top of OAS benefits. Depending on income levels and personal circumstances, GIS can significantly increase a senior’s monthly income and help cover essential living expenses.

What can your Government do for you ?

There are provincial programs that help pay for Medical Services Plan premiums as well as prescription drugs and medical supplies.  The provincial government has programs that provide financial assistance for a number of housing issues, including: rent subsidies (Shelter Aid for Elderly Residents – SAFER), property tax deferral modifications to your home (Home Adaptations for Independence – HAFI)

What services are provided by the Govt ?

Provincial programs are available to provide financial assistance for a variety of transportation needs. These programs include:

  • Public Transit: Programs like the BC Bus Pass Program offer subsidized passes to make public transit more affordable.
  • Transportation to Medical Appointments: Assistance is available to help cover the costs of traveling to and from medical appointments, ensuring that essential healthcare services are accessible.
  • Taxi Services and BC Ferries: Financial support may be provided for taxi travel and BC Ferries, making it easier to get around when public transit is not an option.

Additionally, there are many other programs designed to assist with transportation costs, catering to various needs and circumstances. These resources are designed to help make mobility more affordable and accessible, supporting your journey every step of the way.
